A New Representation · Luis Fernando Roldán

We are thrilled to announce the representation of Luis Roldán.

There are artists whose work never ceases to ask questions; Roldán belongs to that realm: a territory of experimentation where pictorial matter finds, time and again, new ways to manifest itself.

Over the course of more than four decades, his practice has examined the material conditions of the world to construct a language that moves between painting, drawing, ceramics, and assemblage as variations on a spatial concept. Each medium he uses opens up a new form of expression, and each work extends a ongoing exploration.

In his work, the observation of everyday life becomes a vehicle for emotions. Through the use of household objects and found materials; seriality as a method of inquiry; and the exploration of the tensions inherent in gesture, Roldán transforms the surface into memory and the present. One form suggests another; color is perceived differently, and thus what we thought we recognized becomes unexpected.

The exhibition *Luis Roldán: Periplo. A Retrospective 1986–2016* at the Banco de la República Art Museum provided a comprehensive overview of his work from recent years. His work is part of the collections of the Museo del Barrio, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires, the Banco de la República Art Museum, the Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá, the National Museum of Colombia, the Museo de Arte Moderno de Barranquilla, and the Museo de Arte Moderno La Tertulia.
