Zhivago Duncan

Zhivago Duncan (b. 1980) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Mexico City and Mérida, Yucatán, whose practice spans painting, sculpture, and immersive environments that examine the unstable terrain of human consciousness. Working through archetype, symbolism, and speculative figuration, he approaches mythology not as inherited narrative but as a mutable framework through which contemporary life — with its contradictions, desires, and fractures — can be understood.

Recent bodies of work turn toward an intimate investigation of human experience, examining identity, emotional chaos, and the invisible ecosystems that shape how individuals inhabit themselves and relate to others. Duncan constructs layered visual “jungles” that permeate the body, proposing a shared interior landscape beneath cultural difference.

His works weave together historical references, philosophical inquiry, and speculative imagery, forming spaces where ancient symbols and contemporary anxieties converge.

He has exhibited internationally at institutions and collections including Pérez Art Museum Miami, Saatchi Gallery London, Barjeel Art Foundation, the Olbricht Collection, and Museo MARCO Monterrey, among others. In 2012, he received the Premio Internazionale Le Muse in Florence, Italy. He earned a BFA in Painting from Chelsea College of Art and Design in London.
