Gabriela Pinilla

The artist Gabriela Pinilla (Bogotá, 1983) distinguishes herself through her commitment to historical and artistic exploration. Her work addresses themes ranging from political to intimate history and from art to cinema. It is characterized by a profound interest in unearthing and reinterpreting significant historical facts marginalized by institutional and official narratives.

Pinilla employs a variety of artistic mediums, including painting, installations, objects, books, and videos, as vehicles for her creative expression. Her working process is grounded in meticulous research, utilizing archives, press, historical novels, films, diaries, and family albums as primary sources of information. Through this process, the artist seeks to question and challenge established narratives, offering alternative perspectives to understand the sociopolitical history of Colombia and Latin America in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Reflection on how history is written, documented, taught, and exhibited is central to Pinilla's artistic and investigative practice. Her projects, conceived as small history museums, present documents and photographs that have often remained outside the public domain, thus broadening and enriching the spectrum of stories that deserve to be told.

In addition to her work as an artist, Gabriela Pinilla is a university professor, leading research and artistic production projects in collaboration with students. Her participation in collective research projects has resulted in publications and curations, consolidating her position as a relevant figure in Colombia and Latin America's cultural and historical landscape.
