Fernando Arias

Fernando Arias lives and works between Chocó and Bogotá, Colombia. His work critically addresses nation-building, identity, power relations, politics, violence, and armed conflict, as well as tensions surrounding sexuality and the repressive dynamics imposed by religious and political institutions. In parallel, he has led social and cultural projects; he is the co-founder of Más arte, más acción, a non-profit foundation that since 2011 has developed interdisciplinary art projects in dialogue with artists and communities from Colombia’s Pacific region.

Arias explores the human condition from multiple angles, seeking to awaken collective awareness of the violence inflicted on those who defend territory and life. His practice articulates concepts, ideas, and messages that question consumer society and examine the functioning of social bodies within it. By delving into Colombian reality, he reveals the layers that compose it and becomes a voice for excluded and marginalized communities. His work embodies a form of critical resistance that confronts the unacceptable and brings social discontent to light.

In 1999, he represented Colombia at the Venice Biennale, and in 1994, he won the National Art Prize. Among his solo exhibitions are Nada que Cesa at the Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá (2020); Cuarto frío at Art Gallery, Vancouver (1995); Fernando Arias at Gate Foundation, Amsterdam (1996); Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff (1998); and the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow (2000). He has also participated in international events such as the 8th Havana Biennial (2003); InSite'97, San Diego (1997); and the Mercosur Biennial, Porto Alegre (1999).

His work is part of the collections of Daros Latinamerica, Zurich; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; University of Essex, England; Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; Banco de la República in Bogotá; Museo Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá; and the Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá.
