Mateo López
Mateo López's (Bogota, Colombia. 1978) artistic practice explores cartography, journeys, and construction processes while revolving around themes of chance, encounter, time, and the interconnectedness of events that take place in our daily lives. His work speculates on the perception of time and the construction of ideas, guiding that constructive process through various paths of thought.
With a primarily conceptual focus, his work expands from drawing to installation, architecture, film, and sculptural choreographies. It constitutes a formal and conceptual reflection on the expanded field of drawing, stemming from the conception of this visual expression as a gesture of resistance. Mateo López transcends the limits of graphic language by moving away from the flat surface of the paper and delving into the realms of three-dimensionality and immateriality. In this sense, he explores sound and olfactory drawings, as well as others made with materials related to paper and brought to life scale, forming a series of symbols that seek to be linked to stories that may remain unfinished until unveiled through Mateo López's artistic work.
