Maria Jose Arjona

Maria José Arjona (Bogota, Colombia. 1973) is an artist who explores and intervenes in the boundaries of performance art. She focuses on ambiguity and openness, elements in which a universe resides where the body is the axis and the expressive matter is the testimony of the artistic act itself. For Arjona, the body is a place to generate articulations and question normative conditioning. She moves away from a focus on individual identity and highlights the expansive potential of the body, which can abandon its individuality to appropriate its collective and unconditioned character.

In her performances, her body is located in space-time, engaging and committing directly - whether passively or actively - with an audience that both observes and is observed: she is the vehicle that feels and experiences, and the means through which a discourse unfolds. Her performative proposals involve the opening of a movement that investigates the social and the political, and that converses from silence with spectators through her staging. Her work is endowed with a sobriety that prompts questioning, transcending social, political, ecological, and existential realms.
