Jorge Julián Aristizábal
Jorge Julián Aristizábal's work is difficult to classify because of its deliberate technical and stylistic diversity. He has stated that he avoids cultivating a style, since it would be an infidelity to life itself, which is changeable. The only constant in his work is the insistence on drawing, which has had a strong protagonism in Colombian art in the last decade, and his guiding thread is the use of certain types of figuration, as a camouflage for his sustained criticism of double standards and corruption, careerism and its endemic manifestations.
His artistic production is rooted in multiple dimensions of popular culture and a large number of veiled intimate references. He is an artist always attentive to the games of language, to those that violently imprint the dominant ideologies and to those that are ways of escape from such violence. Aristizábal captures these games in the world of visual culture, where he frequents diverse visual collections ranging from common places such as the press and chromos (graphic reportage, design, advertising), to the deepest sources of his memory and imagination.
For this reason he intensifies the traces of provincialism and the local color of his iconographic and discursive sources. This quality turns his work into a casual conversation, but always illuminated by a shy and merciless sense of humor.
