Vanessa Gómez C.

Vanessa Gómez’s work arises from a deep reflection on crafts, particularly traditional Latin American weaving techniques. These techniques represent an act of resistance against the fast-paced rhythms of modern life and production. Her work focuses on weaving and sewing, where repetition, rhythm, and order contrast with the inaccuracies of mechanized processes, inviting a reflection on the relationship between people and technology.

Weaving, the central element of her work, not only has a poetic dimension related to the ideal structure of society but is also closely connected to the land and natural resources. Gómez’s pieces are a tribute to the manual labor of weavers who honor textile traditions and work in a conscious and environmentally responsible manner.

However, technique is not the only focus of Vanessa Gómez’s artistic exploration. The choice of materials is equally crucial in expressing her concerns and adding her perspectives. Elements like horsehair, feathers, cotton, nylon, thread, and beans have deeply complex relationships with their territories and communities, and they also serve to represent the voice of an artist who, despite dealing with traditional methods, speaks from a contemporary perspective.

“I’ve been interested in the textile process and the meditative aspect of weaving. Ideas emerge from the technique itself, which is linked to a specific culture and territory. I’m not aiming to delve into indigenism but to connect with people through the craft and my work.”
